Each in one sentence

Moodle

Moodle is an open-source LMS that is free to download: courses with quizzes, assignments, forums and grades, run on your own server, in MoodleCloud or with a certified partner.129

Verbalu

Verbalu is a training platform: the live session with quizzes, polls, games and simulations, plus what comes before and after it: sign-ups with reminders, a self-paced course and a knowledge base with quizzes.

When to choose which

Moodle is the better fit when…

  • you need a full LMS: course enrolments, a gradebook with export, progress tracking, badges and competency-based marking1415
  • you want the software and the data in your own hands: Moodle is open source (GPL), has no licence fee and installs on your own server12
  • you have SCORM packages or need to connect systems: Moodle supports SCORM, LTI and H5P, and plugins too on your own server162
  • you run formal assessments: a quiz with a question bank and more than a dozen question types, graded assignments and peer assessment (Workshop)109
  • learners should study in an app, even without internet: the Moodle app for iOS and Android gives offline access to courses17
  • your IT team requires sign-in through the company directory and remote classes inside the course itself: LDAP, Shibboleth and OAuth 2 are standard, and so is BigBlueButton video conferencing2113

Verbalu is the better fit when…

  • the heart of your training is a live session, in a room or on a call: quizzes, polls, word clouds and games on participants' phones. Moodle's standard activities include no quiz run live for the whole group, and MoodleCloud does not let you add plugins98
  • participants should get in without creating accounts: in Verbalu a code or a QR code is enough, while Moodle needs an account and a course enrolment (a guest can only view content)12
  • you don't want to install or maintain anything: your own Moodle means a web server, PHP and a database that you manage yourself32
  • you want to start free and pay monthly: MoodleCloud gives a 28-day trial, then a yearly plan from $160, billed in Australian dollars645
  • AI should prepare the material: in Verbalu AI turns your file into a training agenda and a quiz on built-in credits, while in Moodle an administrator first connects their own AI provider, and the built-in actions are generating text and images, summarising and explaining18
  • your training also has a before: a sign-up page with approval and reminders, plus team games and simulations in the room

Start alongside, no migration

You don't need to move anything to start.

  1. Keep Moodle where it works: courses, enrolments and grades stay where they are.

  2. Run the live part in Verbalu: participants get in with a code or a QR code, no accounts. Paste the link to the session or course into your Moodle course as a plain URL.

  3. Got your material in files? Upload a PowerPoint or PDF and AI turns it into an agenda and a quiz. Export the results to CSV or Excel.

Questions and answers

Can Verbalu replace Moodle?

Not always. If you need a gradebook, SCORM packages, LTI integration or sign-in through the company directory, stay with Moodle.141621 Verbalu is enough when you train a team or clients and need a live session, a self-paced course with a certificate and a knowledge base with quizzes, with no server and no participant accounts.

Can I use Verbalu together with Moodle?

Yes, alongside it. Verbalu has no LTI or SCORM integration, so it will not become a graded activity in Moodle: you paste a link or a session code into the course and export the results to CSV or Excel.

Can I bring my questions and courses over from Moodle?

Moodle exports questions from the question bank as GIFT, Aiken, Moodle XML and XHTML.23 Verbalu does not read those files today, nor Moodle course backups. Upload the material you teach from (PowerPoint or PDF) and AI builds a quiz and an agenda from it.

Does Moodle have a live, game-show-style quiz?

Not among its standard activities: the Quiz activity is one each learner works through on their own.910 There is a community plugin, Realtime Quiz (a quiz in the room where everyone answers at the same time), but it needs your own server or partner hosting, because MoodleCloud does not allow installing plugins.118 In Verbalu the live quiz, polls and games are built in and run on participants' phones.

What does a year of training for 100 people cost?

On MoodleCloud the limit covers every user of the site: 100 users means the Mini plan at $270 a year, paid up front (billed in Australian dollars; the USD amount is indicative).45 A Moodle installation of your own has no licence fee, but the server and its upkeep are yours.13 On Verbalu, Pro is $12 a month for the whole organization of up to 10 people, which is $144 a year, billed monthly, with no participant limit.

Where is the data?

Moodle on your own server keeps data wherever that server is. MoodleCloud stores it in the AWS region chosen at sign-up (Ireland, Sydney or Oregon), which cannot be changed later.219 AI features in Moodle use the provider the administrator connects.18 Verbalu keeps its database (Google Cloud, eur3), files and server functions in the EU. Text is generated by one selected provider (Google Gemini, OpenAI or Anthropic), images and AI search run on Google Gemini and recording transcription on OpenAI; transfers outside the EEA rely on the Data Privacy Framework or standard contractual clauses.
