Golden Stream

A game for learning to read a statistical sample - over five rounds players estimate how the stream's 100 hidden stones break down and what it is worth, working only from a drawn sample.

What is the Golden Stream game?

Golden Stream is a training game about inferring from a sample. At the start of the session the system draws 100 stones of varying value hidden in the stream. Players know it may contain gold ($500), silver ($100), agate ($50) and opal ($20) - but they don't know the stream can also hide more valuable stones: ruby ($800), sapphire ($1000) and diamond ($2000). Their goal is to estimate how the full 100 stones break down, and therefore the total value of the stream.

The game runs over five rounds. Each round the system reveals five random stones - the same five for every player - shown in an attractive, colourful way. Players fill in their tables with how many of each type they think there are among the full 100 stones; the table checks that exactly 100 have been allocated and computes the resulting stream value. If a previously unknown stone shows up in the sample, only then does its row appear in the table. Players also see their estimates from previous rounds. The host sets the pace - ending a round, discussing progress and starting the next - and projects charts of each player's estimated stream value round by round. At the end the host reveals the true value of the stream and ranks the players by who came closest.

Features

Key capabilities

  • Hidden population with surprises

100 stones of varying value. Players know four types from the start; three more valuable ones are only discovered in the sample - the heart of the lesson about categories beyond your initial knowledge.

  • Five rounds, a growing sample

Each round the system reveals five random stones, the same for everyone. The sample grows round by round and estimates should get sharper.

  • Validated table

Players allocate 100 stones across the types. The table enforces that the total is exactly 100 and computes the resulting stream value live.

  • Live charts

The host projects a chart of each player's estimated stream value round by round - a great basis for discussion.

  • Final ranking

After the fifth round the system reveals the true value of the stream and ranks players by who came closest.

Step by step

How it works

  1. Start the session

The system draws 100 stones in the stream. You show the QR code, and players type their name and tap “Join the game”.

  2. Reveal stones each round

You start a round and the system shows five new random stones. Players fill in their tables and submit an estimate.

  3. Discuss and continue

You see player status, end the round, discuss progress on the charts and start the next one. Players can only edit their tables while a round is active.

  4. Reveal the result

After five rounds you show the true value of the stream and the ranking - who estimated the population most accurately.

Use cases

What it’s good for

  • An introduction to samples, populations and estimating proportions
  • Showing how a growing sample improves estimate accuracy
  • A lesson about categories you didn't assume at the start
  • An energetic statistics exercise with a competitive edge
  • Show why a small sample can mislead
  • A statistics exercise that actually holds attention
  • Explain inference from a sample without formulas on the board
