Competency self-assessment

Competency wheel

A self-assessment drawn as a pie: every competency is a slice, every level a ring. Participants colour their level on their phones, and you see each person's wheel and the averaged wheel of the whole group.

What is Competency wheel?

You write a question, list the competencies with descriptions and name the levels - from 2 to 7, with level 1 at the centre. That makes the wheel: as many slices as competencies, cut by rings into the levels. The wheel is saved in your library and you run sessions from it, sharing a code or a QR code.

Participants join from their phones and colour one level in each slice, reading the description of the competency next to it. On your screen the group's averaged wheel grows, with each person's wheel under it - ready material for a conversation about what the training should spend its time on.

See it in action

You colour the levels, the group wheel grows

A participant colours one level in each slice of the wheel. On the facilitator's screen the answers of the whole group turn into an averaged competency wheel.

Features

Key capabilities

  • The wheel draws itself

You type the competencies and the levels and the wheel redraws as you go. From 3 to 12 slices, from 2 to 7 rings.

  • A description for every competency

Under the name you add what the competency looks like in practice. The participant reads it right next to the rating, so everyone means the same thing.

  • Levels in your own words

Name only the levels that need it: just starting, I work on my own, I can teach others.

  • Self-assessment on a phone

A tap on the wheel or on a numbered button. A refreshed phone comes back to the levels already marked.

  • The group wheel and personal wheels

The averaged wheel grows live. Click a person to see their wheel with a line marking the group average for comparison.

  • Sessions, table and CSV

Every run has its own code and results. The table of all ratings exports to CSV, and presentation mode puts the wheel on the projector.

Step by step

How it works

  1. Write the question and the competencies

Add a description to every competency, so the participant knows what they are rating.

  2. Name the levels

Choose from 2 to 7 levels and describe the ones that matter most.

  3. Run a session

Share the code or the QR code; participants colour the wheel on their phones.

  4. Discuss the group wheel

Show the averaged wheel on the projector and compare it with personal wheels.

Use cases

What it’s good for

  • A diagnosis at the start of a training: where the group stands today
  • A measurement before and after a development programme
  • A competency map of a project team
  • A development talk: the employee's self-assessment as the starting point
  • Onboarding: what a new person still has to learn
  • The wheel of life and other reflection wheels in coaching
